MOLA TECTA - SELFTITLED

To some of us, the emo revival of the 2010’s feels like just yesterday - however, 2014 and the seminal records that came with it (The Hotelier, etc) are now well in the rear view mirror. While the alt scene zeitgeist has largely evolved into something more “arf arf” orientated, there are still bands out there who have chosen to weaponize clearly sung and nostalgic lyrics over thoughtfully chiming instrumentals. This brings us to mola tecta, whom manage to eschew feelings of this era recently left behind while bringing influences further gone as well (Cursive and Karate immediately come to mind).

Over a tight nineteen minute runtime selftitled sets the scene of a band who has clearly put thought and effort into the sound they are trying to achieve. A three vocalist assault helps to keep things varied without ever losing a sense of cohesion - clean guitars are most often the weapon of choice by Nico, with penultimate track “Dry” being the largest exception - ending in an emotional crescendo laced with distortion and dynamic drums provided by Hauke.

Maxi (bass) manages to carve out an incredibly strong niche in every track, weaving behind the guitar and vocals and providing a sense of movement that is often overlooked in many contemporaries that come to mind. Listeners who choose to come back for repeat listens will be rewarded by the layers that are created as a result.

Mola Tecta have only played their first shows as a unit in 2025, and have made it clear that that they are not only a band worth watching in the German DIY scene, but to a much larger audience. “selftited” is available now on cassette and cd via mum says, be polite rec.

There’s only a few physical copies left so please be sure to message the band directly at their Instagram profile we’ve linked below!

Mola Tecta is everyone on vocals, Nico on guitars, Maxi on Bass & Hauke on drums.
